Our animals can be prone to eye issues from dust, irritants that can get in their eyes. Animals lick to clean and sooth areas that are irritating them, but some animals cannot reach their eyes to do so. It is not anatomically possible for them, so they will rely on blinking and tears to keep their eyes clean.
Conjunctivitis is when to mucus membranes of the eye become inflamed. This is not a serious condition, but it can be quite irritating to the animal. It can leave them with itchy, runny eyes with sticky secretions that are visible down the inner eye. Irritants and microbial infections can cause conjunctivitis.
In this situation we will want to use herbs that are antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and astringent. These are very gentle and effective for eye concerns like conjunctivitis, these herbs include:
- English Marigold
- Golden Rod
- Eyebright
- Raspberry Leaf
- Goldenseal
- Nettle
A herbal tea would be best for the eye, as a saline solution would irritate and sting your animal’s eyes. You must filter the tea after steeping to rid the tea of any herbal particles. You can use a coffee filter or a muslin bag, repeating this at least two times. You can cool the tea and use it as eye drops. Store extra covered in fridge and use within 24 hours.

If it is too stressful for your animal to apply drops, use a cotton pad to wipe all over the external eye lid area to direct the tea in the eye.
