Herbs are useful for repelling mites and easing itch and irritation created by them. Mites can infect both cats and dogs. They are caused by Otodectes Cynotis, Sarcoptes Scabiei, Demodes Canis mites (causes mange in dogs).
Prevention
Just like fleas, mites affect depleted and run down animals, rather than strong, healthy ones. Feeding you animals a nutritious diet, giving nutritive/adaptogen herbs like ashwaganda helps run down animals. Keeping this in mind, creates a good preventative for an ear mite infestation.
Herbal Remedies
Garlic is the main mite-repellent, a garlic-infused oil applied topically in the areas you are seeing mites. The sulphur in garlic kicks them out, forcing them to find a different home. The same can be done with mullein-infused oil, but it’s also great for earaches and excess ear wax. Ointments can also be used but oil is easier to massage through the hair coat and down to the skin. Herbal rinses/baths are also an option, using lavender, liquorice, neem and peppermint.
Goldenseal, nettle, English marigold, butterbur and Oregon grape help sooth inflamed and irritated skin. Some anti-itch herbs would be helpful such as chickweed, St John’s wort, lavender, peppermint or cleavers. Healing herbs would be wise to incorporate such as marshmallow root, Irish moss, lavender, English marigold, woundwort, slippery elm, goldenseal or horsetail.
Mental/Emotional State
It is distressing and exhausting for any animal that is enduring any type of skin infestation. Herbs for the nervous system to ease the nerves internally is recommended. Some options are skullcap, passionflower, valerian or oat straw.
