Animal Mental Health: Behavioural Problems

Approaching behavioural problems holistically is worth its weight in gold because it acknowledges that an animal’s behaviour challenges are a reflection of underlying issues. This approach can show us that behaviour issues can be resolved once we manage the stress, anxiety or low mood in our fur babies. It also sheds light on the fact that there are no “bad” animals, just concerns or circumstances that are causing their reactive behaviour.

This is why the holistic approach is best when it comes to behavioural problems. In these cases, we are not only working with the animal, but the animal parent as well. The parent may need to drastically change the way they are with their fur babies. Not only that but a change in diet, environment, and an increase in mental stimulation like play may need adjusting. Herbal supplements can help but we need to address the animal’s entire lifestyle to make long lasting positive changes.

In holistic healing we always treat every animal as a unique individual, this is especially true when we are dealing with behaviour concerns. However, in most cases we are dealing with chronic stress in the animal which could look like low mood or anxiety and stress. This is why we need to approach their program in a way that would be more effective for them.

For low mood, the following beneficial herbs are:

  • St John’s Wort
  • Lemon Balm
  • Vervain
  • Oats
  • Catnip

Animals suffering from anxiety and stress, herbal remedies include:

  • Passionflower
  • Oat Straw
  • Skullcap

This would be a long-term approach and it may be more effective to use a blend of herbs to support them entirely, working on adaptation, anxiety and nourishment. You would be looking to use this program for your animal for at least a year in low doses.

Consult with a holistic veterinarian or holistic practitioner to direct you in the right direction. If you feel you are in the dark and uncertain, herbalist have the expertise and wisdom to direct you to top quality herbal products for your animal. Do not use any remedies if you are not certain which and how to use them, it is best to work with a practitioner.
