Animal Herbal Remedies For Bumps And Bruises

animal herbal remedies for bumps and bruises

Today we will be discussing bumps and bruises that we may come across at times on our animals. It is difficult to see any bruising or even find bumps on our animals, since most of them are covered in fur or feathers, especially when their coat is very thick. Most of the time we only know about them when we have witnessed the accident that would lead to the bump or bruising. In this case, if you are fortunate enough to be aware of such an injury, there are wonderful topical herbal remedies to help with any pain, discomfort and speed up healing of these bumps and bruises.

At the time of the accident, you will want to apply an ice pack if your animal will allow you for no longer than 10 minutes. This is then followed by a cool compress with a herbal tea or tincture diluted in water of yarrow, comfrey or St John’s wort (or a combination of the three). Another option is to use an oil infusion or an ointment, as long as there is no open wound, this can be used at the time of the injury. These herbs will help to decrease any pain and bleeding beneath the skin and promote healing.

Once a day or so has passed, this is about the time we want to address and inflammation that has arisen from the injury at this point, causing a new form of pain and discomfort like soreness and stiffness. Arnica is a wonderful anti-inflammatory that can be applied on the bump or bruise used as a tincture diluted in boiled water that has been cooled to warm. Soak a cloth in this solution and apply on the site as a warm compress, relieving their pain. Arnica will not only aid in pain relief, but it will also help promote healing in order to speed up recovery. It is also wonderful for lymphatic drainage and flow which will help to bring down the swelling of the injury.

Arnica is also a powerful herb for bruising, as it helps to repair the damaged capillaries beneath the skin. Daisy and lady’s mantle are also great herbs that work this way as well. All three can be used topically for this purpose as an infused oil or an ointment.
